Winter Institute Registration Opens [4]

The American Booksellers Association today announced the opening of registration for its Second Annual Winter Institute, to be held in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday and Friday, February 1 and 2, 2007. ABA member booksellers can now register [5] for the Winter Institute's two full days of free programming, as well as make hotel reservations [6], through the association's trade website, BookWeb.org.

The Winter Institute will be held at the Doubletree Portland-Lloyd Center, where ABA has negotiated a special rate of $99 per night for attendees. All hotel reservations must be made through ABA; the hotel will not take direct reservations for this event. Booking is through the online form on the ABA site [7]]. Event registration, which is being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, will be capped at 500 booksellers.

Returning for a second year as Winter Institute event sponsors are BookExpo America, Baker & Taylor, and Ingram Book Company. "We're delighted that BEA, Baker & Taylor, and Ingram have again signed on as lead sponsors," said ABA CEO Avin Mark Domnitz. "It's great to know that our partners recognize the value of providing top quality education to ABA's bookseller members." Additional sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks.

Noting booksellers' high level of praise for this past January's inaugural event, ABA's director of education, Len Vlahos, said, "We're really excited about our second Winter Institute. We believe we've put together an excellent program that will live up to our members' expectations, and we're hoping to see booksellers turn out in force."

Education sessions and special events, which include most meals, fill the two-day event, so ABA is encouraging booksellers to arrive in Portland on Wednesday, January 31. Programming begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday with a Welcome Breakfast, followed by the plenary session, "A Whole New Mind," featuring bestselling author Daniel Pink.
