NPR & ABA Partner to Share Book Coverage, Indie Bestsellers [4]

In a joining of like minds, NPR and ABA have partnered to provide thoughtful bestsellers and unique book coverage to readers, both on NPR.org and IndieBound.org.

Starting November 13, NPR Books [5] will publish four bestseller lists weekly, using the Indie Bestseller List feeds. The categories to appear on the site are the Hardcover Fiction, Hardcover Nonfiction, Paperback Fiction and Paperback Nonfiction lists.

"We think this list is the right one for the NPR audience," said Joe Matazzoni, who heads up the Books section on NPR.org. "The Indie Bestseller Lists are weighted to give smaller stores an equal voice with big ones, and bottom line, they are less liable to feature mass-market bestsellers and are more slanted toward literary fiction and thoughtful nonfiction. These are the books our listeners are interested in."

NPR.org is also a member of the IndieBound Affiliate Program. Each book review and story on NPR.org links to the book mentioned for sale through independent bookstores. See NPR's new book feature "What We're Reading" [6] to view the links. This provides repeat exposure of indie bookstores to regular NPR.org readers, and an ongoing opportunity to buy from IndieCommerce stores.

And NPR is making its presence known on IndieBound.org. The book info pages on IndieBound.org now feature audio content from NPR's extensive book coverage, adding to the reviews, features, and interviews that are now a part of IndieBound.org's recently enhanced book data. See Mary Karr's Lit [7] or Weekends at Bellevue [8] by Julie Holland as examples.

"This is a wonderful partnership," ABA CEO Oren Teicher said. "The indie bookstore presence on NPR.org is not only a perfect fit, but important exposure to consumers invested in shopping locally and supporting communities. And IndieBound.org pages are greatly enhanced by unique NPR audio."
