This week, the American Booksellers Association announced the winners of 55 scholarships to the January 2014 Winter Institute [6] in Seattle. Forty-nine of the scholarships have been awarded to booksellers by the Winter Institute’s publisher sponsors [7].

“Once again, publishers have demonstrated their commitment to independent bookselling by sending a record-breaking number of scholarship recipients to the Winter Institute,” said ABA Development Officer Mark Nichols. “We hope all of our members will join us in thanking them for their continuing support.”

Additionally, five ABA members have been awarded scholarships by the Book Industry Charitable Foundation [8] (Binc), a non-profit dedicated to providing financial assistance to booksellers since 1996. And ABA has named the recipient of its Avin Mark Domnitz Scholarship [9], awarded to a store that participated in the 2013 ABACUS Survey.

A scholarship awarded by the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association [10] in memory of Glenn Goldman was previously announced.

Publisher-sponsored Winter Institute scholarships cover the conference fee, up to four nights plus tax at the Westin Seattle at the special ABA rate, and transportation costs up to $400.

There are currently waiting lists for both Winter Institute event registration and the host hotel, the Westin Seattle. Booksellers who have registered but are no longer planning to attend, as well as anyone who no longer needs their hotel reservations, are asked to contact ABA [12] as soon as possible. Booksellers on the waiting lists will be contacted on a first-come, first-served basis when cancellations are received.
