Judith Appelbaum to Be Honored by BISG

Judith Appelbaum, an active BISG member who recently served on the organization’s Executive Committee, will receive the BISG 2014 Lifetime Service Award at the BISG Annual Meeting of Members [4] on September 19, 2014, in New York City. Appelbaum is managing director of Sensible Solutions, Inc. and a well-known writer, speaker, teacher, and consultant.

This week, BISG also announced the following individuals as finalists for its Most Valuable BISG Volunteer Award:

  • Tzviya Siegman, Digital Book Standards and Capabilities Lead, Wiley
  • Patricia Payton, Manager of Publisher Relations and Content Development, Bowker
  • Kempton Mooney,  Research and Analytics Director, Nielsen Book
  • Jenny Bullough, Manager, Digital Assets, Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.

The winner will be announced at the BISG Annual Meeting of Members.

Kyle Zimmer Named NBF’s Literarian Medalist

Kyle Zimmer has been selected as the National Book Foundation’s [5] 2014 Literarian Medalist. Zimmer is the founder of First Book, a program that buys books from publishers and makes them available to teachers and program leaders at lower prices.

Zimmer is being honored for her dedication to childhood literacy and educational equality. First Book has contributed to underserved communities throughout the United States and abroad, and it has been cited as the source of great improvements in literacy and educational programs that participate.

Dave Kliegman of Penguin Random House Feted by Malaprop’s

Dave Kliegman, a sales representative for Penguin Group USA for 32 years, is selling for his final season and plans to retire. The folks at Malaprop’s Bookstore [6] in Ashville, North Carolina, recently surprised Kliegman with a goodbye get-together, a “penguin” cake, and many good wishes and hugs.
