Here’s what’s happening in the world of indie bookstores this week:


The Brain Lair Bookstore

Finley’s Fiction [6] in Shelter Island Heights, New York, hosted an opening reception [7] on July 3.

That Book Store [8] in Wethersfield, Connecticut, held a soft opening on July 15. On August 3, the store will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony, with the rest of its grand opening celebration continuing through the weekend. Children’s authors Rosemary Wells, Brenna Burns Yu, and Emilie Boon will be in attendance.

The Brain Lair Bookstore [9] in South Bend, Indiana, will be hosting its grand opening on July 28, in conjunction with a Harry Potter celebration. The store’s goal is to promote diversity through reading [10].

Canterbury Book Store [11] in Escanaba, Michigan, has reopened under new owners [12], Rebecca Bender and Jesse Traub.

Bards Alley [13] in Vienna, Virginia, celebrated its first anniversary [14] on July 15.

Books & Books [15] in Miami, Florida, hosted an event on July 15 with Michael Reynolds, editor of Europa Editions, and Emily Cook from Canongate and Coach House Books. The two shared what goes on behind-the-scenes at a small indie publisher, how international presses must finesse their book for U.S. readers, and a number of book recommendations.

Scout and Morgan Books [16] is celebrating its fourth year of running the annual Find Waldo Local Scavenger Hunt [17], which supports 23 local businesses in Cambridge, Minnesota.

Allison Hill, CEO of Vroman’s Bookstore [18] in Pasadena, California, was interviewed by Pasadena Magazine [19] about her innovative business practices in the world of retail.

Julia Fleischaker, owner of Greedy Reads [20] in Baltimore, Maryland, was interviewed by BmoreArt [21] about working in the publishing industry and opening a bookstore.

Travelers Today featured a list of bookstores [22] every bookworm must visit, which included City Lights [23] in San Francisco, California; Powell’s Books [24] in Portland, Oregon; BookPeople [25] in Austin, Texas; and The Last Bookstore [26] in Los Angeles, California.
