Dear Booksellers,

We’re closing out the week with critical information you won’t want to miss:

Payroll Taxes

President Trump’s much-reported payroll tax deferral plan is NOT a cut. It is the deferral of certain employee payroll taxes for employees making less than $4,000 bi-weekly, and the IRS will collect the money at a later date. Businesses are awaiting further guidance from the Treasury Department clarifying, among other things, that the deferral is voluntary at the election of employees; who is held liable for repaying the taxes (employee vs. employer); and a stated due date and mechanism to repay the deferred taxes. The deferral is set to take effect September 1, 2020, through December 31, 2020. As we await clarification and guidance, talk to your accountant about the best way to move forward.

Labor Law During COVID

A recording of August 11’s legal labor law webinar, “Safety Moving Forward: Your COVID Game Plan,” is now available. ABA welcomed guest speakers Tom Jardim, Scott Salmon, and Stephanie Steinberg for the webinar. Jardim and Salmon are experts in employment and labor law from the law firm Jardim, Meisner & Susser, P.C., and Steinberg is human resources director at Hachette Book Group. Topics covered included considerations when a bookseller or someone they live with travels to and returns from a hotspot or some states’ quarantine mandates restricting entering from out-of-state. Booksellers can also access the presentation slides. Note: Members must be logged in to BookWeb.org to access the video.

Health Insurance

Register for the ABA/LIG webinar scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, at 2:00 pm ET. This informative presentation will last approximately 45 minutes, will go over all program details of ABA’s health insurance partnership with LIG, and will provide an opportunity for you to ask questions. If you cannot attend, a recording of the webinar will be made available.

IndieCommerce Credit Card Processing

This webinar offers critical information for IndieCommerce and IndieLite stores that are transitioning from ABA’s credit card processor to their own credit card processor.
