ABA at BEA: Next Week’s Highlights [5]

Here’s a roundup of the American Booksellers Association’s programming highlights, BEA breakfast and lunch events, and resources for booksellers at BookExpo America [7]. ABA’s Day of Education [8], sponsored by the Ingram Content Group, kicks off on Monday, June 4, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.


Sunday, June 3

9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.: How to Succeed at Retail Bookselling: Introduction to the Bookstore Business [9](St. Giles Hotel, 130 East 39th Street at the corner of Lexington Avenue)

Monday, June 4

Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Russo and noted broadcaster and author Lynn Sherr will discuss the evolving role of the author amid the significant, ongoing changes that are fundamentally altering the industry, and the important part that indies play in this process.

1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.: Indies International: Bookselling in Other Countries [11] (Room 1E14/15/16)
ABA CEO Oren Teicher will be joined by Simon Skinner, sales director of Nielsen BookData U.K.; Fabrice Piault, vice editor-in-chief of France’s Livres Hebdo; and Franziska Bickel, owner of the Vogel bookstore in Schweinfurt, Germany, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Retail Booksellers Committee of the German booksellers association, Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, for a discussion of bookselling trends, models, and innovations from an international perspective.

2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Putting the “Sell” in Bookseller [12] (Room 1E13)
Panelists, who will focus on bringing “salesmanship” to the next level, are Arlene Lynes, owner of Read Between the Lynes [13]; Calvin Crosby, general manager at Book Passage [14]; and Christopher Zane, founder and president of Zane’s Cycles [15] and author of Reinventing The Wheel: The Science of Creating Lifetime Customers.

2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Roundtables

Forty authors, including most of this year’s winners and honor recipients of the E.B. White Read-Aloud and Indies Choice Book Awards, will take part in this joyful celebration. Reservations are required; booksellers should bring their confirmation e-mail from ABA Development Officer Mark Nichols.
