Here’s what’s happening this week in the world of book publishing and bookselling:
- BookExpo and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced two CEO panels during BookExpo 2018: “State of the Industry: Publishing and Copyright Policy” [5] and “Leadership Roundtable: Publishers on Publishing.” [6]
- IPG has signed distribution agreements with 10 new independent publishers [7], including Gilgamesh Publishing, Massey University Press, and J. Ross Publishing.
- The University Press of New England [8] (UPNE) — the publishing consortium founded in 1970 and run for the last two years by Dartmouth College and Brandeis University — will shut down by the end of the calendar year. After that, the two institutions will take independent control of their own imprints.
- The 38th annual Los Angeles Times Book Prizes [9] recognized 11 literary works [10] published last year, including the March 2017 Indie Next List #1 pick [11] Exit West by Mohsin Hamid for fiction, and Long Way Down by 2017 ABA Indies First spokesperson [12] Jason Reynolds for young adult literature.
- The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) has named 30 titles across eight categories as 2018 Southern Book Prize finalists [13], representing the best in Southern literature. Winners will be announced on July 4.
- Lambda Literary announced plans to honor Edmund White with the organization’s Visionary Award and Roxane Gay with Lambda’s Trustee Award at the 30th annual Lambda Literary Awards [14] on June 4 in New York City.
- The MacDowell Colony [15] has awarded fellowships to 84 artists from 18 states and six countries. Among those, the list features a number of writers, including 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner Andrew Sean Greer and poet Monica Youn.
