WHAT TO DO

From romance to mystery, thriller to horror, fantasy to science fiction, and so much more, the world of genre fiction is filled with loyal readers. Find out how to reach them at this month’s Marketing Meetup on June 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Advance registration is required. Use the sign-up form at the bottom of the ABA Meetups page to join the appropriate mailing list.

Register now for a virtual antitrust event with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) on Tuesday, June 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. Senator Klobuchar, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, will answer questions on the most pressing issues to small and independent businesses; breakout sessions will offer a chance to share your experiences with peers. The event is co-hosted by ABA and the Small Business Rising coalition.

There's still time to sign up to receive a Banned Books Week kit for Banned Books Week 2021. The deadline to sign up is June 11. Important: All bookstores (including stores that already signed up in the past) MUST sign up to receive a kit this year.

Deadline Extended: Booksellers now have until Wednesday, June 16, to submit their responses to ABACUS, ABA’s free annual financial benchmarking survey. Using the ABACUS report is like adding a financial officer to your staff; it clearly highlights areas that need improvement, areas in which your store is succeeding, and everything in between. Questions? Email ABA Senior Strategy Officer Dan Cullen.

The ABACUS survey is live and available for participation now.

An ADA compliant website is important for accessibility and inclusivity. It can also be a legal issue. A couple of stores have received letters recently from attorneys who appear to be actively searching for websites that are perceived to be in violation of the ADA, though that may or may not be the case. See if your website is compliant here.

WHAT TO KNOW

ABA's health coverage partner, LIG Solutions, has compiled summer health and wellness resources for booksellers, including healthy living and healthy eating tips as well as mental health tips.

Starting next Tuesday, June 8, the NYC Department of Small Business Services is offering a free four-session, two-week workshop series, "The New Normal: Adapting Your Small Business Playbook," to help small businesses respond to the coronavirus pandemic and prepare for the future. The session will be interactive and include assignments to deepen learning and apply concepts.

ABA’s gift certificate program is being phased out. Booksellers can order remaining gift cards here. The "A Book is a Present You Can Open Again and Again" certificate, illustrated by Mary Engelbreit, is no longer available. The "Books, the Perfect Gift (A Child of Books)" certificate, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston, will only be available until the current supply is gone. Contact ABA Membership Assistant Kate Brennan for more information.
