WHAT TO DO

Talk with colleagues at next week’s ShopTalk, which will take place on Tuesday, June 1, at 3:00 p.m. ET. ABA will send the meeting link to the entire bookstore membership a few hours before each event. If booksellers do not receive the email invitation (and cannot find it in their spam folder), they should reach out to info@bookweb.org.

Are you reaching genre readers? Find out at this month’s Marketing Meetup on Thursday, June 3, at 1:00 p.m. ET. Advance registration is required. Booksellers interested in attending should use the sign-up form at the bottom of the ABA Meetups page to join the appropriate mailing list.

Register now for a virtual antitrust event with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) on Tuesday, June 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. Senator Klobuchar, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, will answer questions on the most pressing issues to small and independent businesses; breakout sessions will offer a chance to share your experiences with peers. The event is co-hosted by ABA and the Small Business Rising coalition.

Take a look at some of the new titles added to ABA’s Pre-Order Calendar. Some highlights added in recent weeks include: House of Sticks by Ly Tran (Scribner); The Next Rules of Work by Gary A. On May 25, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing Amazon of fixing prices on its online marketplace and “harming competition, stifling innovation, and illegally tilting the playing field in its favor.” Though the lawsuit is limited in scope, it comes as an increasing number of regulators and lawmakers are looking to limit Amazon's power. Read ABA's white paper, sent to AG Racine, here.

The American Library Association is offering discounted registration for the 2021 ALA Annual Virtual Conference to ABA members. For $69, ABA members can attend the conference and have access to all of the Library Marketplace activities for a full year. (Booksellers can also sign up for the Library Marketplace only and upgrade to a full ticket later if they wish to attend the conference, too.)  Register for the conference here.

Carrie Kopeke of Skylark Bookshop talked with Indies Introduce author Ly Tran about her debut House of Sticks (Scribner).

The ABA Board of Directors approved the following language for ABA’s new investment policy: “The ABA’s intention is to invest in socially responsible companies. The investment managers are asked to base investments on valuations and earnings growth and to also consider company performance with regard to socially responsible investing criteria, as determined by the Board under periodic review and in a manner consistent with the association’s ends policies. The investment managers are asked to bring existing or potential investments in companies that do not perform well based on these criteria to the board’s attention for review.”
