Independent bookstores, get ready to dazzle our judges!

10 Years of Indie Bookstore Day: An Instagram Display Contest

WHAT: Join in the celebration of Independent Bookstore Day's 10th anniversary on Saturday, April 29, for a chance to win up to $500 as part of a special display contest! 

WHO: ABA Member Bookstores with Instagram accounts (whether or not your store is carrying exclusives) can create spectacular and eye-popping displays for customers to enjoy leading up to and/or on Independent Bookstore Day. Judging of all eligible entries will be conducted by Regional Executive Directors.

WHEN: The contest runs from April 24 to May 1, 2023. On or about May 2, 2023, judging will be conducted by Regional Executive Directors from among all eligible entries received to award One (1) Grand Prize, consisting of five hundred dollars ($500) and two (2) Runners-up Prizes, consisting of two hundred and fifty dollars ($250) each.

HOW: Some general guidelines include the following: 

  • Bookstore Instagram accounts have until May 1, 2023, to share one post (photo/photo carousel), tag @americanbooksellers, and use #IndieDisplayContest in the caption to be entered to win.

  • Display theme:

  • Displays should feature anything related to the following statements:

    • We are your neighbors. 

    • We support the right to read.

    • We champion new and historically marginalized voices.

    • We nurture young readers.

    • We support teachers and schools. 

    • We contribute to local charities.

    • We keep jobs and sales tax dollars in our community.

    • We love books.

    • We have the best pets.

    • We are Independent.

  • Judging criteria:

    • Visual presentation

    • Creativity and originality

    • Theme and spirit

    • Bonus: Stacks the Bookstore Cat, humor, use of color(s), education like advocacy and shopping local facts
