Massachusetts: Last Chance for the Freedom to Read

You wrote to your state senators last fall, urging them to pass the senate version of H.3594, An Act Regarding Free Expression — and they did! You wrote to your representatives in March. You followed up with your reps during National Library Week in April. But the House Ways and Means Committee still has not scheduled H.3594 for a vote, and time is running out. July 31, 2026 is the last day of this legislative session, and we need them to vote on H.3594 before then — or else Massachusetts will fail to protect the freedom to read again.

We ask you, once again, to do your part to protect the right to read in Massachusetts!

New Hampshire: Contact the Governor and Read-In Against SB 434

An unnecessary, invasive bill that could increase the number of book bans in New Hampshire is headed to the Governor’s desk. SB 434 is the latest iteration of a bill that has been vetoed, voted down, but refuses to go away, and now it is up for a veto once again.

Tell Governor Ayotte that this bill is just as misguided as it was last year and deserves her veto!

When you’ve done that, consider participating in a read-in against the bill on June 11 and/or letting your customers know about it. This is a great chance to build connections across the reading community in New Hampshire for a freer, more book-filled Granite State.

New York: We Are Running Out of Time for the Freedom to Read Act

We’ve lobbied, we’ve rallied, we’ve responded to a gubernatorial veto last year, and we are so close to the finish line to proactively protect the freedom to read in New York. But the long budget process in Albany has put the bill in jeopardy. This may be your last chance to speak up for the freedom to read in our state until next year.

Call Speaker Benedetto’s office and let him know you want this bill to be a priority! Then share this link with your colleagues and customers so they can do the same.
