Bloomsbury Books Turns 35

Booklovers in Ashland, Oregon, are invited to stop by Bloomsbury Books on April 19 to help the store mark its 35th birthday, according to the Ashland Daily Tidings.

Co-owners Karen Chapman and Sheila Burns will host a party celebrating Bloomsbury’s long life, as well as the staff and customers who keep the store humming. The downtown bookstore has grown from small beginnings into a two-story landmark that was named the state’s Best Small Bookstore by the Oregonian in 2012.

The party, which will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Former co-owner Denise Harnly and the family of late co-owner Nancy Peterson will be in attendance at the fête, as will many longtime customers.

“We’ve made so many friends along the way and it will be nice to have everyone in one place, sharing memories,” Chapman told Tidings.

The Book Shelf Mounts an Indiegogo Campaign

Chris Livingston, owner of the Book Shelf in Winona, Minnesota, has started a Save An Independent Bookstore Indiegogo campaign to keep his store’s doors open for at least another 13 years.

Those who choose to can support the campaign, which has raised $810 in seven days, by contributing an amount of their choice or posting the link on social media. Funds raised will be used to reduce operating debt, refresh inventories, and expand the children’s department, Livingston said.

Those who donate can also sign up for a number of perks. For $175, donors can get six staff-selected books sent to them, one every other month for a year.
