Acorn Books Reopens in New Location

After three years in Dover, Delaware, Acorn Books has moved to neighboring Smyrna, about 10 miles north, reported the Smyrna-Clayton Sun-Times. The bookstore is owned by Ginny Jewell, a resident of Smyrna.

“I loved this location but I agonized about moving from Dover,” said Jewell. “This location has so much potential, though. It’s right on the highway, so it’s got great visibility, and it has the size and space I needed.”

At the end of Acorn’s lease in Dover, Jewell sought a new location with a lower rent. “I felt a sense of responsibility,” she said. “This store represents things that aren’t very much represented in this world anymore: a small, independent business and a book store. I don’t want these things to go away and it’s our responsibility to keep them here.”

In its new location, Acorn will continue to offer new and used books, and will now also have a party room available for birthdays and showers, as well as author signings, open mic nights, and more.

Before opening Acorn Books, Jewell was the manager of Atlantic Books in Dover.

Shakespeare & Co. to Complete Renovation in September

New York City’s Shakespeare & Co. is undergoing a renovation, to be completed next month, that will include a new coffee shop and expanded seating, plus a handicap-accessible restroom on the first floor, DNAinfo reported.

The store will also be home to an Espresso Book Machine, a print-on-demand device created by On Demand Books. The machine will allow customers to self-publish books on the spot if they come equipped with a flash drive with their document on it. A new section of the store will soon highlight such self-published writers.

“Nothing like this exists in New York right now,” said store manager Pete Isop. “It will be great for students to do their work and get their coffee, but for a lot of local writers in the neighborhood, we’ll make it a very welcoming space.”

Dane Neller, the founder of On Demand Books and CEO of Dean & Deluca gourmet grocery stores, purchased the bookstore earlier this year.

Barrington Books Shares Back-to-School Favorites on Local TV

Jennifer Massoti, store manager at Barrington, Rhode Island’s Barrington Books, appeared this week on WPRI’s The Rhode Show to share her favorite titles coming up this fall.

Back-to-school doesn’t just mean back to academia, noted Massoti, it can also be a time to set new goals and prepare to tackle a new year. “There are so many books that can help you with your daily and weekly routine,” she said.

In the nearly four-minute segment, Massoti highlighted a variety of titles for young children, middle-grade readers, and adults, including cookbooks and coloring books for grown-ups.
