Copperfield's Books recently announced that it would be moving its current downtown Napa store to a new location in Napa's Bel Aire Plaza in mid-February. The new location, a 9,700-square-foot space, will house 60,000 - 70,000 book titles, 1,200 magazine titles, and will be the largest bookstore in Napa's history. "I am absolutely thrilled at the opportunity of being the biggest bookstore in the Napa valley," said CEO Tom Montan. "It will be a magnet for this area. We … have no other competitor of this size within a 30 mile radius, and this will give us an immediate advantage."

Copperfield's Board of Directors decided to move to the new location because, as Montan explained, "We had been challenged for many years in an under-performing location in the heart of old Napa downtown…. We needed a new location with a larger retail space in which to bring in the customers that were just not served in our old location. The end of our lease was a great opportunity to move to a much bigger location that will better serve this area."

Montan told BTW that the new Copperfield's would contain a "very exciting retail environment … creative retail flow, and also … some unique fixtures. We will feature a coffee bar, and a uniquely branded children's section."

The bookstore was co-founded in 1981 by Paul Jaffe and Barney Brown and is still owned by their families, along with other members of the Copperfield board. In addition to Napa Valley, Copperfield's has six other locations, in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Calistoga, and Sebastopol, California. Former Marketing Director Montan took the role of CEO in 2003 and is spearheading Copperfield's recent transformations. --Karen Schechner
