E.B. White Read Aloud Award Winners Announced

The 2010 winners of the E.B. White Awards were announced at the ABC Not-a-Dinner and Mostly Silent Auction on Tuesday, May 25, at BookExpo America.

This year's winners are:

• Picture Book: The Curious Garden by Peter Brown (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers)

• Older Readers: The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z., by Kate Messner (Walker)

The E.B. White Read Aloud Awards honor books that reflect the universal read aloud standards that were created by the work of the author E.B. White in his classic books for children.

APA Names 2010 Audies Winners

The Audio Publishers Association (APA) announced the winners of the 2010 Audies® at its 15th Annual Audies Gala at the Museum of the City of New York on Tuesday, May 25, in conjunction with BookExpo America.

Among this year's winners are:

• Audiobook of the Year: Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales, edited by Nelson Mandela (Hachette Audio)

• Distinguished Achievement in Production: The Help, by Kathryn Stockett (Penguin Audio)

• Biography/Memoir: Anne Frank Remembered, by Miep Gies and Alison Leslie Gold (Dan Balow/Oasis Audio)

• Fiction: The Help, by Kathryn Stockett (Penguin Audio)

• Literary Fiction: Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel (Macmillan Audio/BBC Audiobooks America)

McLean & Eakin "As American as Apple Pie"

McLean & Eakin Booksellers in Petoskey, Michigan, received high praise from author Ann Patchett in a May 2 article in the New York Times Magazine. In "As American As Cherry Pie," Patchett talks of her love for the "dreamy little town" of Petoskey and how, when she first walked into McLean and Eakin "all the other bookstores I've known in my life fell away."

Even in the dead of winter, McLean & Eakin makes a visit to Petoskey a good vacation, Patchett said: "It is just so thrilling to be around people who read, people who will pull a book off the shelf and say, 'This is the one you want.' People who want to know what I'm reading and will tell me what they're reading so that while we talk, stacks of books begin to form around us. It's my own personal idea of heaven. It is also, in this age of the overnighted electronic hand-held, a bit of Americana you aren't going to see everywhere. Like the town of Petoskey itself, a very good bookstore feels a little nostalgic, a place out of time. Look at all those people looking at books! It is at once as rare and ordinary as really good pie."

Lightning Source Receives Environmental Certifications

Ingram's Lightning Source has received Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification from three environmental organizations: the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC™), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC™).
