2005 Hugo Winners Announced

The 2005 Hugo Awards, honoring excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy, were presented at the Worldcon Convention on Sunday, August 7. This year's winner of best novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, by Susanna Clarke (Bloomsbury USA), was a Book Sense Book of the Year fiction winner. Among this year's other winners were:

  • Best Novella: "The Concrete Jungle" by Charles Stross (Golden Gryphon)
  • Best Novelette: "The Faery Handbag" by Kelly Link (Viking)
  • Best Short Story: "Travels With My Cats," by Mike Resnick
  • Best Related Book: The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction, edited by Edward James and Farah Mendlesohn (Cambridge University Press)

R.L. Stine to Chair MWA's "Kids Love a Mystery"

The Mystery Writers of America (MWA) recently announced that R.L. Stine will serve as honorary chair of "Kids Love a Mystery." The MWA program joins authors of juvenile and young adult mysteries with children, parents, teachers, and librarians in a year-round nationwide celebration of mystery writing and reading designed to foster literacy, deductive reasoning, and critical thinking skills.

Stine's participation will begin in October, officially "Kids Love a Mystery Month" since the program was initiated seven years ago. Stine will be assuming the honorary role currently held by television personality Katie Couric and filled the previous year by First Lady Laura Bush. To date, more than 12,000 children have participated, according to MWA national board of directors member Marianna Heusler, who chairs the program. Ingram Names Kevin Moran Field Sales Rep

On August 9, Ingram Book Group announced that it had named Kevin Moran as a field sales rep, serving New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Moran is joining Ingram to help grow sales on behalf of Ingram Publisher Services Inc., client publishers and to provide Ingram wholesale services to current and prospective customers.

As a field sales rep, Moran will be responsible for establishing and maintaining strong, long-term relationships with booksellers to promote new-title releases and backlists of Ingram's client publishers, as well as Ingram's wholesale services. During the past 15 years, Moran has worked for Continuum Books, Springer-Verlag, IDG Books Worldwide, and Tab Books.
