Videos of the ABC Children’s Institute plenary sessions featuring authors Brad Meltzer and Tim Federle, as well as a four-minute highlights reel featuring booksellers and authors, are now available to all ABA member booksellers with a BookWeb username and password. The videos, the first of a series from last month’s Children’s Institute in San Antonio, are made possible by a grant from author James Patterson.

Meltzer, the author of I Am Abraham Lincoln and I Am Amelia Earhart (part of his Ordinary People Change the World series, Dial), kicked off the Children’s Institute at an opening reception on the evening of April 6 with the plenary talk “What Is Your Legacy?” Watch the video and learn what Meltzer had to say about booksellers’ legacy and the impact they have on their communities — and what endures. “Sometimes, as you know, it can take a lifetime to have an impact on a community,” said Meltzer. “But when you do, it will pay you back forever.”

Federle, the author of Five, Six, Seven, Nate! and Better Nate than Ever (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers), who danced on Broadway in New York City and later coached young dancers for the play Billy Elliott, encouraged booksellers at the April 7 morning plenary, “From Broadway to Books,” to welcome new readers to their stores by approaching each day with new eyes and treating each customer as though they had never been in the shop before. “On the day that you put the right book into the right hands ... you can and you will change a life,” he said. “I don’t think of you as booksellers, I think of you as book soldiers because you are fighting for stories that I think need to be heard and read, and I salute you from the sidelines.”

The three videos are also available on the ABA Education Curriculum on BookWeb.org, along with videos from the 2014 Winter Institute and session handouts from past education events. Watch for more videos from the ABC Children’s Institute to be released over the coming weeks.
