Don’t Miss Out: Share Your Ci4 Backlist Book Swap Pick Now

All ABC Children’s Institute (Ci4) attendees planning to participate in the Backlist Book Swap Party, which kicks off the institute on Tuesday, June 21, should let ABA know now which favorite kids’ book they’ll be swapping. So far, just one quarter of Ci4 registrants have shared details about the favorite book they’ll be bringing to share with colleagues, and time is running out.

All Children’s Institute registrants — booksellers, publishers, and guests — are invited to participate in the Backlist Book Swap. Titles to swap can include board books, young adult novels, or anything in between, so long as they are at least five years old and still in print. Attendees should let ABA know as soon as possible which book they will be bringing.

Unlike at Winter Institute, there may not be an opportunity to visit a local indie bookstore to pick up a book before the reception, so attendees should set aside a book and a bookmark now and then be sure to pack both.

The bookmark will serve as a way for Book Swap participants to make connections at the event; booksellers should bring a store bookmark, but generic bookmarks will be available on-site. On the bookmark, the giver will write the book’s title and a blurb about why they selected that particular book to share, as well as their name, business name, and an e-mail address or phone number. The recipient of the book will be encouraged to reach out to the giver via phone or e-mail while at the reception.

As part of a larger ABA initiative to provide members with new opportunities to share, showcase, and support favorite backlist titles, the Book Swap will feature Revisit & Rediscover selections from the Summer 2016 Kids’ Indie Next List. Attendees will have the opportunity to browse several titles from the list, which includes picks for ages 4–8, 9–12, and teens, and to take home galleys.

Attendees will also have the chance to snap photos in an old-school photo booth before they go home with their new backlist book.

Following the Children’s Institute, ABA will supply a full list of the books shared at the Backlist Book Swap, along with information about who brought each title.

The Welcome Reception and Backlist Book Swap Party will be held on June 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Key Ballroom at the Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive.

Registration for Children’s Institute is now closed. Registrants who are no longer planning to attend Children’s Institute are asked to notify ABA as soon as possible. To cancel an event registration or hotel reservations, or for any questions regarding Children’s Institute, e-mail [email protected].
