To address the Drupal 7 upgrade and its effects on all IndieCommerce stores, the American Booksellers Association is expanding in-person IndieCommerce education at next month’s BookExpo America and is encouraging all stores to send their employees who are involved in website administration. In addition to one-on-one appointments, IndieCommerce staff will present several upgrade Q&A sessions, as well as a variety of upgrade mini-sessions in the ABA Indie Bookseller Lounge.

The complete IndieCommerce program at BEA will be announced in the weeks to come. To see the current schedule of ABA programming at BEA, visit ABA’s BEA mini-site on BookWeb.org.

ABA members receive free badges for admission to the trade show, and rooms are still available at Hotel ABA (the Grand Hyatt New York). Anyone booking before April 7 will be entered in a room giveaway, and the chances of winning are good. Very affordable rooms are also available at Barnard College for $75/night.

IndieCommerce upgrade training will continue throughout the summer in a variety of ways; however, ABA is encouraging as many bookstore staff members as possible to take advantage of the opportunity to meet in person with IndieCommerce staff at BEA.

In addition, ABA Member Technology Director Neil Strandberg is urging all owners and managers to be sure they are receiving updates on the upgrade of their IndieCommerce websites from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7. Because the upgrade will be a disruption, “we think it crucial that all decision-makers be in the information loop,” said Strandberg.

Anyone involved in a store’s IndieCommerce site who hasn’t been receiving the periodic upgrade e-mails can sign up here.

In an April 1 communication to IndieCommerce stores, Strandberg discussed the wide variety and flexibility of Drupal 7’s off-the-shelf themes, as well as the alternatives for stores that hired a developer to substantially customize their Drupal 6 theme and want to do so again for Drupal 7. The details can be found here.
