On Tuesday, December 3, NBC News' Today Show announced that the sixth selection of its monthly "Today Book Club" is Paradise Alley by Kevin Baker (HarperCollins). The title was a 2002 November/December Book Sense 76 pick. Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes, chose this month's selection. Both Baker and McCourt were guests on the morning show.

Baker's novel details the story of the Civil War draft riots in New York City. In nominating the book for the 76, Rita Moran of Apple Valley Books in Winthrop, Maine, said, "This is an extraordinary tapestry of the events surrounding New York City's Civil War draft riots. The novel follows the lives of six characters, using flashbacks that illuminate both the Irish immigrant and African-American experiences. Baker's book is carefully researched and beautifully written."
