Vivendi Looks to Shed Debt

Houghton Mifflin on the Block

Paris-based Vivendi Universal SA grew fast amidst a two-year buying spree by former chairman Jean-Marie Messier. Unfortunately, so did the company's debt. Messier was subsequently fired in July, and on August 14, Messier's replacement, Jean-Rene Fourtou, announced that the company is looking to shed some of its 19 billion euros in debt: First on the block -- U.S. publishing giant Houghton Mifflin.

Bookseller and Publisher Cooperation Sought to Keep Online Handbook Up to Date

The launch of the Book Buyer’s Handbook online on April 25 has enabled ABA to add new data and to change incorrect information on an ongoing basis to provide booksellers with a comprehensive source for accurate, timely information about publishers’, wholesalers’, and distributors’ trade terms. In order to maintain the data’s accuracy, the association is seeking the help of booksellers, as well as publishers, in alerting handbook staff to new or changing terms.

Ingram Book Group Announces Around-the-Clock Customer Service

On April 24, La Vergne, Tennessee-based Ingram Book Group announced that its Customer Care staff would expand from 12 hours per day to 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The new hours should benefit booksellers, said Keel Martin, spokesperson for Ingram. "Booksellers are spending most of their time serving their customers," he said. "Being able to call after hours should be a great new convenience."

Perseus Books and Running Press to Merge

On March 14, Perseus Books Group (PBG) and Running Press announced an agreement to merge the two houses. The result will be one of the largest independent trade book publishing companies in North America. "This merger will bring together two entrepreneurial success stories in the world of publishing," Jack McKeown, CEO of PBG, said in a press release.

Baker & Taylor Enters the Publishing Distribution Business

Baker & Taylor [B&T], one of the country's largest wholesalers, is moving into the publishing distribution business. And, if all goes according to plan, that should be good news for small publishers and independent booksellers, according to Arnie Wight, senior vice president of distribution for Baker & Taylor. "As we get to a critical mass of publishers, it will result in greater efficiencies," he said. "Greater efficiencies should mean price competitiveness."
