Leslie Hawkins of Spellbound Children’s Bookshop, Kerri Poore of Politics & Prose, and Jessica Stockton Bagnulo of Greenlight Bookstore discussed how to implement and manage book-of-the-month clubs and online registries at a Winter Institute session moderated by Holly Weinkauf of Red Balloon Bookshop.

Bestselling author Jon Scieszka, a nationally recognized reading advocate and the founder of Guys Read, has joined the Children’s Institute panel “Reaching Reluctant Readers.”

Registration for the 2015 ABC Children’s Institute is expected to reach maximum capacity within the next several days; booksellers who want to attend should register now.

Booksellers who want to attend the 2015 ABC Children’s Institute are encouraged to register as soon as possible as space is limited. The event, to be held April 19 – 21 at California’s Hilton Pasadena, is open to all ABA bookseller members.

On February 8, just prior to Winter Institute 10, 25 booksellers, representing 17 prospective or established businesses, participated in the “Introduction to Bookselling” workshop presented by ABA and facilitated by Mark and Donna Paz Kaufman of the Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates.

Reading Lolita in Tehran author Azar Nafisi’s keynote address on “The Republic of Imagination” on the final day of Winter Institute 10 in Asheville received a standing ovation from booksellers, moved by her message of books’ essential role in society.

On the final day of Wi10, ABA CEO Oren Teicher announced that Winter Institute 2016 will take place in the heart of downtown Denver, Colorado, near the 16th Street Mall.

The 10th anniversary celebration of the Winter Institute, held this week in Asheville, North Carolina, brought more than 500 ABA member booksellers, 100-plus authors, and close to 20 international guests from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and France to the stunning setting of the historic Grove Park Inn. 

Author Steven Johnson kicked off ABA’s lineup of plenary speakers at the Winter Institute with a Monday morning keynote that discussed how serendipitous collisions of ideas have, throughout history, driven innovation and fostered creativity in unexpected ways.

Registration for the 2015 ABC Children’s Institute, to be held April 19 – 21 at California’s Hilton Pasadena, is now open to all ABA bookseller members. Booksellers are encouraged to register as soon as possible as space is limited.

This spring, ABA will once again be traveling around the country to meet with members and non-members alike at 10 Booksellers Forums, held in conjunction with the regional booksellers associations.

Programming for the upcoming Children’s Institute includes a diverse array of educational sessions on topics ranging from hosting in-store birthday parties and reaching reluctant readers to starting teen and middle-grade book festivals.
