On the final day of Wi11, ABA CEO Oren Teicher announced that Winter Institute 2017 will take place in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The 11th annual Winter Institute, held from Saturday, January 23, through Tuesday, January 26, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, was ABA’s biggest standalone education event yet. Close to 600 ABA member booksellers took part, along with more than 100 authors, 160 publishing professionals, 35 Consultation Station service providers, and 40 international guests from eight countries.

Kicking off the first full day of educational programming at Wi11, author and brand-building expert Martin Lindstrom delivered a breakfast keynote based on his upcoming book, Small Data: The Tiny Clues That Uncover Huge Trends.

While more consumers are choosing to shop locally to support their communities, a number of challenges remain for local economies, as presenters will discuss during three education sessions on localism at Winter Institute 11.

Applications for publisher-sponsored scholarships to the 2016 ABC Children’s Institute, to be held in June in Orlando, Florida, are being accepted via a form on BookWeb until March 31.

ABA member booksellers interested in attending this year’s ABC Children’s Institute, to be held in Orlando, Florida, from June 21–23, can now submit their names via a form on BookWeb for the chance to win a publisher-sponsored scholarship.

Brand-building expert Martin Lindstrom will kick off Winter Institute 11’s educational programming on January 24 with a breakfast keynote examining how ABA members can reinvigorate their businesses. 

Programming for children’s booksellers at the upcoming Winter Institute includes four sessions presented by the ABC Children’s Group at ABA, plus opportunities to learn about new children’s, middle grade, and young adult books and authors.

A Wi11 education session led by Total Computing Solutions’ Jim Hammons will review data security and PCI compliance standards to show booksellers how they can better protect their customers’ credit card data and their own businesses from liability.

Here, booksellers who will be featured on the Winter Institute 11 panel “How to Keep Seasonal Customers Year-Round” share some of their best practices for keeping engaged with local customers and seasonal visitors to spur sales during slow months.

Starting today, November 12, Winter Institute 11 registrants can sign up for Advanced Learning Education sessions for store owners and managers and for Denver-area bookstore tours, which are open to all bookseller attendees and international guests.
